
6th Annual Mid Pines Hickory Open
November 6-8, 2009
A field of 57 competitors from 15 states as well at Toronto and Ontario, teed off Saturday, November 7th in the 6th Annual Mid Pines Hickory Open Championship at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. This has become one of the most popular events using clubs primarily from the 1920's and where players dress in plus fours and ties. The event is played over the first weekend in November on the Donald Ross Designed layout, a course that is valued among one of the best in North Carolina.
Roger Andrews from Jenks, OK won the gold medal in the Donald Ross Division (Gross Division) with a score of 74-78-152. Rick Woeckner of Woodbridge, VA finished second and won the silver medal with a score of 77-72-154 and Ted Kopec from Niceville, FL finished in third place winning the bronze with a score of 76-82, 158.
Rusty Wells from Pinehurst, NC won the gold medal in the Julius Boros Division (Net Division) with a score of 70-68-138. Paul Dietz of Sarnia, Ontario finished second and won the silver medal with a score of 71-68-139 and Eric Wagner of Troy, VA finished in third place winning the bronze medal with a score of 75-68-143.
Charles McMullin from Williamsburg, VA won the gold medal in the Skip Alexander Division (Gross Senior Division) with a score of 77-78-155. Barry Markowitz of Sanford, NC finished second and won the silver medal with a score of 84-80-164. Terry Howarth from Washington, PA won the gold medal with a scorecard playoff in the Skip Alexander Division (Net Senior Division) with a score of 68-70-138 over Joseph Whisnant from Greenville, NC finished second and won the silver medal with a score of 71-67-138
Ed and Rick Woeckner won the gold medal in the Bobby Jones Gross Division. Dick and Mike Heller won the gold medal in the Bobby Jones Net Division. The Bobby Jones Division is a Father/Son Team Better Ball Competition played on the final round
Barbara Kopec from Niceville, FL won the Gold Medal in the Peggy Kirk Bell Ladies Division.
Pine Needles Hosted a Foursomes Competition on Friday, November 6, 2009 for the Mid Pines Hickory Open Weekend. We had 12 teams compete using a true Alternate Stroke format.
Tanner Stweart and David Ellis finished first in the Gross Division of the Foursomes Competition and Tad Morre and Ted Kopec came in second place. Paul Dietz and Hugh Cameron finished first in the Net Division and Marty Joy II and Chuck McMullin finished in second place.
The 7th Annual Mid Pines Hickory Open will be played on November 5-7, 2010.
