Pine Needles/Mid Pines Resort Hosts over 200 Senior Amateurs in Society of Seniors Championship

Championship plans return to venue in 2020

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – November 10, 2016 – More than 200 members competed at Pine Needles and Mid Pines in the Society of Seniors Championship, a three-day, 54-hole event.

“Pine Needles and Mid Pines proved again to be a great test for our championship,” said James Popa, Executive Director at The Society of Seniors. “The beautiful weather was only surpassed by the wonderful accommodations at both resorts. The recently renovated Mid Pines is nothing short of spectacular and the newly grassed greens at Pine Needles are as fine a surface as we’ve seen in years.”

The field was split into three divisions based on age; the Dale Morey Division for players age 55-64, the John Owens Division for players aged 65-74 and the Grand Masters Division for players 75 and older.

In the Dale Morey Division, Keith Decker (Martinsville, Va.) nabbed first place shooting 217, edging Adam Kugler (Closter, N.J.) who finished at 221.

In the John Owens Division, Paul Schlachter (Bridgeville, Pa.) led all players at 216, five shots ahead of a trio knotted at 221; Bev Hargraves (Little Rock Ark.), Charlie Yandell (Cashiers, N.C.) and Logan Jackson (Winston-Salem, N.C.).

In the Grand Masters Division, Jared Long (Aiken, S.C.) shot 230 outlasting top competitor Jack Vardaman (Washington, D.C.), who finished at 233.

The event featured a pair of two-time Senior Amateur Champions, Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. and Kemp Richardson of Laguna Niguel, Calif.

“Due to the overwhelming requests from our members,” said Popa. “The Society of Seniors plans a return in 2020.”

The Society of Seniors was founded in 1983 with the purpose to provide strong competition for the finest senior amateur players. The Society of Seniors has nearly 850 members, including USGA Senior Amateur Champions, Walker Cup players and state amateur tournament winners.
